Powering a Massive Egg Farm Without the Grid
Victory Eggs, a newly converted, large-scale egg farm located in remote Lockwood, Victoria, faced an immediate and critical power dilemma. Housing a massive 200,000 chickens across three expansive 5,000 sqm sheds, the farm was previously a standard chicken operation with no existing grid connection. Their reliance on an outdated 90 kW generator was proving utterly insufficient for the upgraded farm's demanding machinery, modern feeding systems, and, most crucially, the vital cooling required to prevent catastrophic chicken losses during Victoria's scorching summers.
With just 30 minutes of power loss posing an existential risk to their livestock, Victory Eggs knew they needed an unshakeable, reliable off-grid system, and they turned to AVT Solar for the solution.
The Challenge
Building a robust, self-sufficient power system for such a critical operation presented several significant challenges:
- Complete Grid Independence: The farm's remote location meant a fully independent, robust power solution was absolutely essential, with no reliance on a distant or non-existent grid connection.
- Immense Power Demand: Keeping 200,000 chickens comfortable and operations running smoothly required a substantial and utterly consistent energy supply for cooling, feeding systems, and all machinery.
- Compromised Roof Structures: The sheds' roofs, unfortunately, showed signs of oxidation and damage from years of chicken waste and moisture, making a traditional roof-mounted solar installation unfeasible. This necessitated an alternative ground-mounted design.
The Solution
AVT Solar engineered and implemented a powerful, custom off-grid solution for Victory Eggs, featuring:
- A
100 kW solar system for primary energy generation.
- A substantial 144 kWh battery bank for reliable energy storage.
- A robust 145 kW diesel generator for backup power.
The Result
The clever design saw the old 90 kW generator recommissioned as an additional backup, creating a sophisticated power hierarchy: solar power is prioritised first, followed by battery power, then the new generator, and finally the recommissioned old generator.
This ground-mounted system not only guaranteed unparalleled reliability but was absolutely critical in enabling the farm's successful conversion and ongoing operations.
With a projected 7-year payback period, this comprehensive off-grid system was paramount to Victory Eggs' viability, safeguarding their livestock and ensuring the continuous, smooth running of their entire operation.
A Sustainable Hub for Rural Egg Production
The innovative ground-mounted design was a true standout feature, masterfully overcoming the challenges of roof degradation. This bespoke solution has transformed Victory Eggs into a sustainable, completely self-powered egg production hub, setting a new standard for resilience and efficiency in rural Victoria.
